these photos belong to alex sturrock. i like the way he directs his subjects but does not over-direct. when people step in front of the camera, they become self-conscious, seize up and all their character just seems to disappear for a moment. its a real art if you can take a formal portrait of someone but at the same time convey their sole and personal nature.
im no expert but im pretty sure this can be achieved by making your subject feel as comfortable in your presence as possible. forming a temporary mutual trust and respect is the key, esp when you're dealing with big characters with an even bigger ego. they're probsbly not going to like some weedy bloke ordering them about unless the before-mentioned bond exists.
