mos def - tour of japan
an interesting insight into the life and mind of mos def whilst touring japan promoting his new album ecstatic. he says some really inspirational stuff. i was happy to hear that even an overly confident supreme hiphop mc like him gets scared putting his rep on the line when trying something new and of what people might think of him. he goes on to say that he would be more scared if he never gave it a go and that most importantly as long as you love what you're doing then that's all that matters.

inspiration - alex sturrock
these photos belong to alex sturrock. i like the way he directs his subjects but does not over-direct. when people step in front of the camera, they become self-conscious, seize up and all their character just seems to disappear for a moment. its a real art if you can take a formal portrait of someone but at the same time convey their sole and personal nature.
im no expert but im pretty sure this can be achieved by making your subject feel as comfortable in your presence as possible. forming a temporary mutual trust and respect is the key, esp when you're dealing with big characters with an even bigger ego. they're probsbly not going to like some weedy bloke ordering them about unless the before-mentioned bond exists.

inspiration
have a look at some amazing b&w photos here of London and its bold characters, amongst other things. this is the inspiration for my new use of b&w.
it always annoys me when the composition or subject of a photo is interesting but the colours are dull. therefore I decided to abandon boring colours in some recent photos for b&w with a punchy contrast. flicks I thought I would never use, I now see in a new light. serious b&w photographers such as this guy (photo by boogie) would probably frown upon this method of reinvention but it works for me.
